Darlene Howard is happiest when she is helping
others. On aptitude tests, Howard always scored high in
social work, but she never considered it as a career.
Business was her choice. Howard helps people because
she wants to.
On Christmas day, she wanted share the holiday with
people who would otherwise be alone. The idea was born
while helping at "No to Abuse." She heard several
people say they had no one in the area to share the
holiday. The thought of people alone on Christmas both-
ered Howard. "Christmas Day is when you need some-
body. Christmas is miserable if you don't have some-
one." She decided to provide an opportunity for people
alone to find fellowship with each other on the holiday.
She started with a telephone call. Yes, the Pahrump
Community Center was available on Christmas day.
Next she contacted a local newspaper to run a brief
inviting people who would be alone on the holiday to
join her at the center. The day of fellowship would begin
with coffee and donuts at 10 a.m. Guests could play
board games, visit or just enjoy being in the company of
others until dinner at 2 p.m.
Christmas was in less than two weeks when Howard
made her decision. She was undaunted as she planned
Christmas decorations including a tree and gifts for
everyone. She would make a festive dinner for her
guests, but how many? She had asked interested people
to call, but had made it clear all, who would be facing the
holiday alone, were welcome. She decided more would
be better.
Emotional rather than economic need was the only
criteria for Howard's guests. The presents were "no big
deal," she said. "I just think everyone should have a
Christmas present. Gifts are part of the holiday tradition
of caring and sharing."
