A Time to Kill

"The Impossible Dream" could have been the theme song
for the film "A Time To Kill." Here we have a modern day Don
Quixote, clothed in the armor of the law setting out to vanquish
the unvanquishable foe, right the unrightable wrong and prove
that a black man can get a fair trial in Mississippi.
This flick is based on the tirst novel written by popular
author John Grisham, writer of such bestsellers as "The Cham-
ber" and "The Pelican Brief." When Grisham wrote this tale he
poured a lot of personal passion into it. Unfortunately this
didn' t transpose to the screen. However the movie does explore
areas of character development that the book doesn't. For
maximum enjoyment see the movie before you read the book.
The storylinc is about a 10 year old black girl who is raped
and lefi [br dead by a couple good ote' white boys. The girl's
father, not willing to let southern justice take its own COUrSe,
blast the twosome to kingdom com in !he halls of justice.
In steps our young Don Quixote. in the guise of attorney
Jake Brigance. It's up to him to see that justice is done.
On his way to the last reel. Jake has to battle the Klu Klux
Klan, which is busy burning crosses, burning houses, and in
one scenej ust burning. Even the robe of the grand dragon won't
protect the wearer from a molotov cocktail. He also has to battle
the N.A.A.C.P., his family and himself.
Up to this point it appears to be a remake of the old Jimmy
Stewart movie, "Anatomy of a Murder." But then "A Time To
Kill" takes on a fresh lif+, because before Jake can defend his
client he has to learn alot about himself and who he is. Both his
client and his mentor provide this information with some of the
best dialogue in the script.
Another point made is this film is that law and justice may
not be the same thing. When the father killed the two rapists he
broke the law, but would it be justice putting him to death?
Matthew McConaughey is certainly believable as Jake, but
it's the support and interplay of the other actors that make this
character real. Ashley Judd plays his wife, while Oliver Platt
and Sandra Bullock are his comrades in court. At one point,
Jake feels his marriage is falling apart, but keeps from falling
in bed with Bullock. The fact
that this is believable is a testi-
mony to the strength of the char-
acterization.
One of the most interesting
bits of casting is Donald
Sutherland as Jake's marinated
mentor, Lucien Wilkbanks, and
his son Kiefer Sutherland as the
KKK crazed revengeful brother
of the dead rapist. Both strong
performances on opposite sides
of the justice fence.
The video carries an R rat-
ing, probably due more to sub-
ject matter than anything else.
The rape is handed so deli-
cately that it hardly seems bru-
tal, but the intensity of the film
may be too much for younger
viewers.
This is a good film. If it
could have captured more of
Grisham' s passion it could have
been a great film.
